    GENERAL

The elves in general believe the old tales about the dragons and the dragon riders. Some of their greatest heroes have come from those days of love and peace that the Dragon Riders. They believe that time will come again.
Every so often one of the elves will go out into one of the human towns and spread the world about the way things used to be before the war started.

    CUSTOMS

The elves only recognise those related to them by blood as family. Aunts and uncles who married into the family are not family. Nor is it usually allowed for humans to be in the family as they are so short lived. A normal family unit consists of a mother, father, and their unmarried children. Once you’re married you leave home. All other family members live on their own in their own homes.

The rights of passage for the elves vary. It depends on your class. For the Seethri, heirs are chosen upon birth. They are not revealed to the general public until the age of sixteen and a ball is thrown in celebration. Sixteen is also the age when elven children switch to adult dress and formalities. The chosen heir is given more attention by the parent whom they are to inherit from than their siblings. They begin learning the role they are to inherit from the age of seven years of age.

For the Sinri, there is a presentation ceremony when they are born, but after that the general public do not see them until their sixteenth birthday again, at which point like the Seethri, there is a ball thrown.

The Eldorae / Sinrae only celebrate amongst their family. There is not a formal celebration for one of these children. Eldae do not get to celebrate because they are slaves.

Another right of passage at the age of one hundred is to touch the current dragon eggs to see if someone would become a Dragon Rider. Some families in the Seethri refuse this right to their chosen heir, but allow their other children to try. It is a generational thing, for some of the Seethri have upon chance become Dragon Riders. again slaves are not allowed to try as Dragon Riders are just lower than the Seethri, in the rank known as Uruohtar, and are always freeborn.

The only people present in a room for the birth of a Seethri or Sinri are the parents.

The only people present for the birth of an Eldorae or Sinrae are the mother and a female priest.

Eldae just have the expectant mother and their master or mistress. Eldae are not allowed to breed without permission. If they have not attained permission, and are caught pregnant, the mother is often whipped, the father transferred elsewhere, and upon birth the child transferred to a third place. The child in this case does not get named by its mother.

Children of the Seethri are raised and educated by the parent they inherit from if they are the named heir. If not the other parent raises them. It is rare that both Seethri and his or her mate will raise all the children together. It is the same for the Sinri. They wear adult dress at sixteen years old.

The Sinrae and Eldorae raise their children equally with both parents helping as there is nothing royal about them. Eldae children are raised by their masters and if found useless for the purpose that master has in mind are sold to someone else.

The elves respect the dead. If found worthy enough an elf may be turned to stone after their death by the dragons. The family of the newly deceased will not sleep for three days after the funeral of their loved one. Only the Eldae are not permitted to mourn.

When it comes to burial of the dead, there is the aforementioned statue burial which is very rare, or there is a special catacombs area in each town that the dead are buried in. They are normally wrapped in black cloth and placed in there. The royals though are cremated, and slaves are simply thrown in a pit dug in the ground.

When it comes to weapons, they are normally swords, daggers or bows and arrows. Of course the Sinri also have the added ability to become a predatory animal, the one exception being a dragon. This other form can be used at will. The Eldae are not permitted to bear arms of any sort.

Commoners swords are silver iron, but the sword of an Uruohtar matches the scale colour of their dragon.

    EATING

Family members all dine together. Servants do not dine with their masters. Being a matriarchal society, the eldest woman or highest ranked sits at the head of the table. Her mate sits to her left. Their heir sits to the head of the table’s right. However this is only the case if the heir is female. If the heir is male, he sits on his father’s other side. In this case, the seat the female heir would occupy stays empty, only ever occupied by a lower ranked guest. If the guest were higher ranked than the family, then the mother of the family would occupy it.

All other children fill the other seats, eldest daughter next to the female heir’s seat.

A formal high court meal is simple enough. If you’re asked if you’d like something and you don’t, refuse the polite way. The way to do do this is to raise the left hand up to your chest with the second two fingers ((thumb being first finger)) touching and sticking out, to have any of the other fingers out is considered very rude. In a none upper class meal, its first in gets the most, but high court meals go via the seating arrangement as to who gets food first.

The Eldae get but one meal a day, a very watery soup, always at lunchtime.

Upper class meals usually start with wine, with a non alcoholic version for the children. It is followed by a platter of seasoned bread, then fruit. Desert is Taakrii ((like a custard tart only with a lid))

When having guests who are human, or Sinae and Sinri, cooked meat is offered to the guests. Humans are a lot more rowdy at meal times and are a patriarchal society. This makes for a lot of disagreements as to who sits at the head of the table at meal times.

Usually drinking water can be drawn from the creeks and wells. When droughts occur, which are rare, they drink wine and ale. Ale, in this case, being aged water and non alcoholic.

    GREETING AND MEETING

when meeting someone new, it is common practise for elves regardless of status or rank, to incline their heads slightly. This is done so that the other person knows no trouble will come of the conversation.

Those lesser ranked, mainly the Eldae will never see their master or mistress bow their head. When meeting a superior, elves will also place an open hand over their heart. It is unknown why this is so.

When it comes to greeting humans, elves will show both palms, as a gesture of peace, as well as the traditional head inclining.

a closed fist is considered rude, as is neglecting to bow ones head. Of course, bowing ones head in the presence of the Minotaur is also considered ruder, as a minotaur never will do the same.

The person of higher rank will always speak first when greeting another. Slave names are never given unless asked.
The full name, including titles, is always given the first time an elf meets someone new. It is never repeated, as the other is expected to remember it. A shorter, commonly used name is also given and is used from then on.

    GESTURES

Normally, interaction happens face to face, within two foot of each other. Or using mirrors if a long way away, such as a different town and you cannot travel to speak to that person immediately.

Saying no thanks, to something offered with the hand gesture and having a third finger sticking out. Not bowing ones head in greeting. both are very rude.

Elves show respect to everyone, but those who are higher ranked get the most from everyone. Especially the seethri.

    VISITS

It is impolite to ask about politics when visiting someone. the host must bring this topic up.

it courteous to offer a guest all the things they are used to at home. two elves of the same gender may not sleep in the same bed unless they are children. It is rude to offer a married elf someone of the opposite sex to sleep with, they must ask. Personal guards and attendants must be offered to the nobles.
